Steve and Jim Geil fished with Dan Delekta and Brandon on the Beaverhead River. Dan Greene and his friend John from Pennsylvania also fished the Beave the following day. Both groups had similar success using the same patterns. Small PMD beadheads were highly effective on these notoriously spooky trout. Both groups        netted some solid fish but they had to work for them amongst many boats. Dan Greene and John also threw white streamers for many followers but only a few hookups.                                                                                                                    -Parker

Dan Delekta guided our guests Tim and Brian on the Beaverhead River. Adult PMDs and Yellow Sallies were present all day.  The group reported good fishing with dries and nymphs. Check out the pics!

Deirdre and Roger had a great time with Brandon on the Beaverhead.  

They were learning techniques for the first time and had great fun and success catching. They were using mostly Sowbugs and Ray Charles patterns.

Nymphs were working for them.

Some of us Beartooth folk got a chance to jet over to the Beaverhead for a quick little fishing/camping trip this weekend. The camping was excellent with a little rain and the fishing was pretty good with sowbugs, caddis, little mayfly nymphs, and streamers. We floated from the Clark Canyon Dam down to Henneberry takeout. The action in the beginning of the float was mostly on caddis and mayfly nymphs, but others I talked to said they had been crushing them on sowbugs such as the Pink Ray Charles, the Dead Ray Charles and the pink Smidget in sizes 18 and 20.

The sowbugs were not really producing for us. The mayfly nymphs however were producing for Ross and I. I was getting them on little green guys on the drop like the olive Hogan’s S&M size 18 with Dan’s Delektable Big Spanker olive above that.

The sun was out hot and the fishing started to slow down a bit by noon, so we thought we would throw some streamers out the back of the boat and float down the river for a while instead of stopping and wading a bunch. Fish On! The streamer bite was the ticket for the water around High Bridge down to Hennaberry. It didn’t seem to matter that the sun was out and beating down hard, they just kept eatin. As normal, there were chases happening almost all the time but the refusals were many.  Changing up colors and stripping technique always helps. As always it was another great day on the Beaverhead with a bunch a fun in the sun!

You can see that Roy, my dog was nice and comfy napping in the boat. Andrea enjoyed the float and learned more about our fishing techniques.

Young Dan and Ross

Brandon took Jose and Jim, “Grampoo”, to the Beaverhead for a new adventure. They had a good  day with the best results on Ray Charles patterns and Sow Bugs. 

As the Madison River came up and dirty, folks started fishing more of the tail water opportunities such as the Beaverhead River.

Ryan and Bronson were fortunate to have a week on the river and caught a variety of Trout during their stay. You can see they like to express themselves with their mouths wide open like the trout they landed. They are growing fins and starting to act like the fish. They sure had a bunch of fun.

Ryan provided a list of bugs they used: Soft Hackle Sow Bug  #16 and #18 pink or dead tan; Ray Charles #18 Pink and Tan; JuJu Baetis  #18 Olive and Purple; Rainbow Warrior #18 and #20; Sawyer Pheasant Tail #18 Red; Halfback Emerger Baetis #18; Halfback Emerger PMD #16; Studly Baetis #18; Cranefly Larvae Olive #8 and #10; Zebra Midge Black/Copper; Black/Silver,Red/Silver #18; $3 Dips Original Brown #16; Z Wing Caddis #16 Olive and Tan; Trico Spinner #20; Pheasant Tail Nymph #16 – #20; and the Sparkle Dun Baetis #18 – #22.

Brandon took Jim and Keefer over to the Beaverhead and they had a good day. The water did come up while they were fishing. They were working it with Ray Charles in Tan and Gray without the hot head then tried some streamer action in Black and Olive.

The Beaverhead is still fishing well. The water levels are low and clear at this time.

The Beaverhead River has been fishing very well lately with water levels still holding good and the pressure seems to be down. Yellow sallies, pmds, and caddis are still rocking the river over there. We also caught fish on the Yellow Fat Albert with caddis and pmd nymphs dropping. Some good fish were caught. There is more grass in the river now.
