April 15th – 28th | Madison River Fishing Report

Flows have been slowly rising out of Hebgen Dam and the weather has been outstanding with most days in the mid 50’s and we even had a couple days touch 70 degrees. This upcoming week is forecasted to be in the mid 60’s most days so get out and enjoy it!

 

Dan and Nancy had a great time floating the river Saturday for Nancy’s birthday and caught some nice fish on some Delektable prototype streamers earlier in the day and on nymphs in the afternoon.

 

The fishing has been fairly consistent with the biggest change from the last report being some moderate Baetis hatches, especially closer to town. With that being said, make sure you’ve got a few small Adams or Purple Crazes in the fly box along with your Midge patterns.

Under the surface things are pretty much the same as the last report. The nymph fishing is by far the most consistent tactic. Flies like the Delektable Stonefly Candy, Delektable Epoxyback, Delektable Lil’ Spankers, Serendipities, Princes, Copper Johns, Worms and Eggs will all get ‘em in the right time and place.

The streamer bite has been pretty good and this is one of our favorite times of year to fish big flies as fish are hungry and a little extra opportunistic when the water is faster. Delektable Double Screamers, Sparkle Minnows, Mini Loops, Zonkers and Sheila’s Sculpins should be all you need to find a few fish.

August 27th – September 2nd | Madison River Fishing Report

Well flows are holding steady as they usually do this time of year. The fish are eating a bit of everything these days and as Summer winds down there’s no better time to take advantage of good weather and good fishing.

We’ll start with dry flies because they’re fun. Not much has changed in this area with focus remaining on grasshoppers and ants with some other attractors bringing them out as well. Our favorite dries this week are the Triple Decker Hopper, Yeager’s Hopper, Grillo’s Pool Toy, Dave’s Hopper, Delektable Flying Ants, Delektable Chubbyness’ and Purple Crazes.

The streamer fishing has been rewarding for those of us willing to go under the surface. Delektable Double Screamers especially in black/olive, McCune’s Sculpin, Sheila’s Sculpin, Fish-Skull Sparkle Minnows, and Sculpzillas have all had their moments of glory lately. I’d recommend getting out a bit earlier if you’re wanting to streamer fish and later in the afternoon for the dries.

Bead-heads are still catch fish, and they do it pretty well believe it or not. We’ve been getting ‘em on Psycho Princes, Formerly Known as Princes, Delektable Hammerheads, Pat’s Rubberlegs, Worms and Lightning Bugs.

August 6th – 12th | Madison River Fishing Report

Firstly, a big thanks to all the firefighters throughout the west and in our back yard for doing all they can to keep us safe! The Monument and Wigwam Fires are nearby and we are watching closely. Now for the fishing, the river is flowing at 1,160 c.f.s. below Hebgen, 1,240 at Kirby and 1,270 down at Varney Bridge.

The streamer fishing is as good as it’s been in weeks. We’re seeing a lot more fish moving for big flies and committing to eating. Mini Loops, Trevor’s Sculpins, Circus Peanuts, Zonkers and Delektable Screamers would be our top picks.

Dry flies have continued to be the preferred technique for most folks with hoppers leading the charge. We’re still getting some action on Purple Crazes and Delektable CDC Elk Hair Caddis in the evening but terrestrials have been more consistent throughout the day. You have a good chance of getting a few fish on flies like Delektable Slammers, Delektable Chubbyness, Delektable Secret Stones, Dornan’s Water Walkers, Yeti Hoppers, Delektable Flying Ants and Dave’s Hoppers.

The Bead-Head bite is about as consistent as you’d expect from the Upper Madison but maybe a bit overlooked by the killer dry fly action. Delektable Hammerheads, Delektable Big and Lil’ Spankers, Electric Caddis, Lightning Bugs, Shop Vacs, Copper Johns and Pat’s Rubberlegs are all good choices.

July 16th – 22nd | Madison River Fishing Report

It continues to be an impressive year here on the Upper Madison with very healthy flows and bug hatches. We’re sitting at about 1,320 cubic feet per second of water flow below Hebgen Lake, at the Kirby gauge she’s running at 1,460 and down at Varney Bridge flows are at 1,690(about 400 c.f.s. above historic average).

The PMDs are coming off around 8 o’clock am, Caddis are hatching throughout the middle of the day and we’re still picking up plenty of fish on the attractors. Our favorite dry patterns have been Delektable Chubbyness’ in smaller sizes, Delektable Secret Stones in Dark Olive, Delektable Halos, Purple Crazes and lastly the Rusty Spinners have been killer as the sun goes down.

Lots of fish are being caught sub-surface as well. Weather under a dry fly or an indicator if you’re looking to get higher numbers of fish you’ll be best off fishing stuff like Green Machines, Delektable Lil’ Spankers in Olive or Pheasant Tail, smaller Pat’s Rubberlegs, Prince Nymphs, Lightning Bugs and Batwing Emergers.

Streamer fishing has brought us a mixed bag of reports but the best luck seems to be coming early in the morning or late in the evening. Recommended flies would be Delektable Single Screamers, Mini-Loop Sculpins, Trevor’s, Sparkle Minnows and Zonkers. You’re probably best off fishing low and slow in the deeper plunge-pools and around the rocks rather than pounding the banks.

October 23rd-29th|Madison River Fishing Report

Warmer than average temps are expected for this week so get out there and take advantage! Flows are still holding steady at around 940 c.f.s. below Hebgen, 1,030 c.f.s. at Kirby and about 1,150 c.f.s at Varney.

With temps expected in the 55-70 degree range throughout the week I’d expect some continuing good BWO and baetis fishing especially on the upper end of the river. I’ve yet to find a baetis dry I like better than the ol’ Parachute Adams and the BWO’s are easy enough to imitate with a #18 purple craze or a split-wing BWO.

 

Nymphs have of course have been the most successful with Pat’s Rubberlegs, Delektable Lil’ Spankers, RS2s and Prince Nymphs all being some of the top flies. Whether it’s a tight-line, under a bobber or behind a streamer those bugs should get you by.

If you just want to chuck streamers be willing to work for it as streamer fishing has been somewhat inconsistent with some really good days mixed in. The Delektable Screamer, Bow River Buggers, Zonkers and Sculpzillas are all good things to have in the box.
